As Shadow Minister for Local Government, I have the privilege of engaging with local government leaders from across the country. In this role, I was delighted to be invited to the Local Government Association’s annual conference in Bournemouth. My constituents will know that I have a long-standing interest in local government from my own extensive service on Hillingdon Council.
At the conference, I had the chance to meet with local government leaders from across the country at this important juncture. As we expect a major announcement on local government reorganisation, and a change of government is imminent, many are concerned about the provision of important local services and, indeed, local democracy. While the Government pushes ahead with its ill-considered remodelling, now is the perfect time for the Conservative Party to be preparing our vision for local government.
As we await new policy announcements over the summer, councillors must be supported as they continue to deliver for local residents.
