Last month, Andy Burnham was crowned new Labour Party leader and Prime Minister. With a pledge to help households and businesses with the cost of living, residents have been left asking ‘is that it?’ in response to measures announced thus far. However well-intentioned, they do little to offset the damage inflicted by the previous Labour administration.
I am also concerned that the Prime Minister has failed to justify his spending. Initial claims that funding would come from scrapping plans for Digital ID were quickly unpicked after it emerged the contentious scheme was itself unfunded. There is now growing concern that we’re heading for tax rises the country can ill afford in order to pay for these policies.
While Andy Burnham has so far managed to avoid parliamentary scrutiny, he will need to face MPs in September. As the Opposition, the Conservatives will rightly be ensuring the new Prime Minister is held to account.
Turning to local matters, the new Northwood and Pinner Health Centre is due to open imminently. Following years of campaigning – dating back to the tenures of both my predecessors – this project is finally nearing completion. This is welcome news for many residents who will soon benefit from a new high-quality health facility.
Lastly, it was a pleasure to visit the Northwood & Ruislip United Synagogue. We are sadly seeing examples of the ripple effects of heightened global tension taking root here in the UK and so this was an important opportunity to offer my personal support to the local Jewish community in Northwood and the surrounding areas. I am grateful to Chair, Alan Moss, for the warm welcome.
