Many constituents will have been paying close attention to the collapse of Sir Keir Starmer’s government over recent weeks.
After the Makerfield by-election, it was only a matter of time before Sir Keir Starmer announced his intention to resign. This only came about because of the relentless pressure brought about by Kemi Badenoch, who uncovered the extent of Sir Keir Starmer’s failures.
From withdrawing the winter fuel allowance from vulnerable pensioners to the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson, it is clear that the Prime Minister was unfit to lead the country.
His departure came after he let his MPs undermine our nation’s defence while pursuing ever higher welfare bills. The failure of the Prime Minister to fund our armed forces left us weak in an increasingly unstable world, and it is clear from recent election results that the British people did not want him to stay. In contrast, Kemi and the Conservatives continue to prove that they have a plan to cut the welfare bill and increase defence spending.
With Andy Burnham set to become Prime Minister, I am concerned that much of his focus will remain on his parochial projects while London is ignored.
Closer to home, my office has been receiving feedback about the new cycle lane in Pinner. The roadworks to facilitate the construction of the latest part of Harrow’s cycle lane network have attracted much attention.
I have a great deal of sympathy for residents affected. I have sought assurances from the council that disruption is minimised, and measures are in place to prevent congestion.
TfL have made a great deal of funding available for local authorities to improve walking and cycling infrastructure. Once complete, I hope the cycle lane will make it easier for residents to access our high streets and stations.
