Following summer recess, I have enjoyed returning to my regular duties in the constituency and in Westminster.
My priority is always the residents who put their faith in me to represent and support them. At my regular surgeries, constituents have the opportunity to raise with me a diverse range of issues, from housing and nationality issues to concerns they have with the new Government’s policies.
One concern that has been raised repeatedly over recent weeks is changes to the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. Each constituent has a different story to tell. Whether concerned for themselves or for loved ones, it is clear that residents are worried about what may happen over winter when temperatures drop.
Vulnerable pensioners across Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner are already face higher housing costs and are disproportionately affected by the cost of Mayor Khan’s policies. Many now have very understandable worries about how they will keep their homes warm and are joined by people across the country.
Age UK are the leading voice of elderly residents and are strongly opposed to the means-testing of the Winter Fuel Payment. Research from the charity suggests that up to two million pensioners desperately need this money and highlights the impact this may have on the health of vulnerable people in every corner of the country.
Thanks to the cross-party work of MPs in Westminster, the Government has already been forced into allowing for a debate and vote in the House of Commons. This will give me and my colleagues the opportunity to put on record our objections while challenging the Labour frontbench directly. Regretfully, due to the size of Labour’s majority, I imagine that they will have the numbers to force through this disastrous policy at the expense of millions across the country.
I would encourage all those concerned about the state of their finances or their health to reach out and ask for help if you need it. I would also ask all my readers to contact their loved ones who may be feeling the pinch more than ever.
