I was pleased to show my support for the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge in Parliament this afternoon.
The Challenge is the UK’s biggest free reading for pleasure programme for children, encouraging 4 to 11-year-olds to keep reading during the summer holidays, helping to create and nurture a lifelong reading habit that is proven to improve life chances. The benefits of reading at a young age are extensive and are highlighted in particular in areas such as mental wellbeing, confidence and creativity.
It will run between 20 June and 30 September, with this year's theme being 'Read to the Beat'. This encourages children to celebrate the joy of music and the power it has to move, inspire and connect us through the magic of reading.
The event was an excellent opportunity to encourage local children to read and make the best of our brilliant local libraries across Hillingdon and Harrow. Further information can be found here.
