Since I last contributed a column, the country has further relaxed restrictions in line with the falling number of cases and fatalities. With each addition to the list of permitted activities, or the number of family members or friends we can see in person, life under ‘lockdown’ becomes that much easier to bear. These changes have been welcomed by many in our constituency, not least young people, or families without gardens of their own, or those who have been alone and without companionship. I recognise that not everyone will be able to immediately enjoy a semblance of normality again, and that there are those amongst us who have lost loved ones. My thoughts are with those for whom a corner has not yet been turned. It is more important than ever that we reach out to people who may need us – be that with a message of support, or with whatever practical assistance we can offer.
I have spent these past weeks speaking to local businesses from all sectors, with organisations providing assistance or looking out for their members, and with representatives from across the community. My overwhelming impression has been that the community has pulled together. Individuals and groups have been supporting one another – including those who are vulnerable and shielding locally. Local health and social care providers, faith groups, and charities, have all responded admirably to unprecedented challenges and our community has been an example of public-spiritedness.
In terms of delivering the response to the pandemic and disruption, the local authorities have also been key. I am particularly grateful for the efforts of Hillingdon Council, about whom I have received a great deal of positive feedback. My office continues to hear from those trying to access support and I stand ready to assist wherever I can. I encourage you to please make contact at david.simmonds.mp@parliament.uk if I can be of assistance, and I will look forward to speaking with local residents at my weekly telephone surgeries.
