Westminster Hall: Brain Cancer

This afternoon, MPs had the opportunity to debate an online petition on brain tumours. The petition attracted over 100,000 total signatures, including almost 200 of my constituents. I have met several of those constituents over recent years, and I want to pay tribute to their remarkable campaigning despite the exceptionally personal and emotional nature of this topic. What was clear during the debate is that there is cross-party consensus on this matter, and there is a need to do more to boost research into brain tumours and unlock the funding that has been promised.

While I was unable to make a full speech during the debate, I had the opportunity to intervene and ask about how we can improve international joint-up. Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood is at the forefront of treatment and trials, but we could be doing more to share this knowledge with our international partners. We are incredibly fortunate to have the excellent Mount Vernon Hospital in my constituency. I am deeply concerned that the specialist cancer services at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre are at risk of being moved to Watford General. While we await the outcome of the NHS’s decision-making, I have been standing up for the centre in Parliament.
